My introduction to poetry was from my family. Some of my early memories are of reading Spike Milligan‘s Silly Verse for Kids, I still have this book (and even a bookmark I made for it when I was a kid). Many of the poetry books I read as a child had wonderful illustrations including a copy of Edward Lear‘s The New Vestments with drawings by Arnold Lobel. I have given my own children poetry books and must say I am often attracted by the illustrations as well as the poems.
Many of my poetry books have been given to me as presents, including an edition of Shakespeare’s Sonnets that was a gift from Keith in the early months of our relationship. I think poetry makes a very personal gift and I have incorporated poems into a number of my paintings, commemorative pieces and ring bowls.
Today is National Poetry Day so why not spare some time to revisit a favourite verse or seek out something new.
