I have been thinking about doing a snail mail project for some time now. When I was at school and college I used to write to friends and family quite often and had a number of pen pals from around the world. I was sorting through some boxes recently and I found this stationery that I have saved from years ago and this gave me the push to start the project.
The joy and excitement of sending and receiving mail is something I want to revisit. I have to admit I’m not a great letter writer but I’m thinking my mail might contain other things as well as letters – drawings, photographs, little makes and gifts and I want the stationery itself to be special.
It would be goodly good if other people joined in with this project so to start things off here is a tutorial and some ideas for making stationery.
Materials & equipment
paper – (I recycled different sorts of paper and wrapping paper for my stationery)
scissors
glue
washi tape
paper punch
pencil
ruler
envelope template (- click here to download an envelope template)
Technique
Draw round the envelope template
Cut out the envelope. If using wrapping paper you can use the patterned side of the paper as the inside of the envelope. If you use plain paper you can make a patterned inner.
Cut out a shape from patterned paper to fit inside the envelope.
Glue the insert shape down.
Then stick down the sides of the envelope, you could glue them down but I think washi tape looks good.
You can decorate the front of the envelope as well.
I made matching writing paper to go in each envelope.
It would be lovely to see everyones’ makes and mail so if you want to you can share pictures on Instagram and Twitter (use the hashtag #meenimail and @bymeeni) and post on my Facebook page. I have also set up a Pinterest board and a Flickr group so if you are on either of those you will be able to add your photos there as well (just contact me to be added to the groups).
Have fun and I can’t wait to see what you send!
