The recent fires in Australia have destroyed habitats and homes. It is estimated that more than a billion animals have died. It is very distressing to hear this news and see the pictures but there are a number of organisations helping to rescue and rehabilitate animals. I have donated to WIRES and have become a Koala Protector through the World Wildlife Fund. If you would like to make this koala I encourage you to make a donation to one of the organisations that are helping or perhaps you could become a Koala Protector too. Please do share your makes on Social Media and tag #meenimakeit and who you have donated to.
What you will need
Felt (I used pure wool felt in grey and white)
Embroidery thread (I used three colours)
Embroidery needle
Scissors
Stuffing
Print koala pattern on A4 paper Koala_Pattern
Technique
Cut out the pattern, pin to your felt and cut out the required number of pieces.
Embroider the details before you sew the koala together.
The inner ear pieces are attached to the main ear pieces with embroidery stitches and then the front and back of the ears are sewn together, I used blanket stitch.
Sew the chest piece to the main body (I used blanket stitch).
I used blanket stitch to sew together the koala.
I started at the side of one leg and sewed the ears in as I went around, one side at a time.
Leave a small gap, approximately 2.5cm to add the stuffing, making sure it fills the limbs and body firmly. Finally sew up the gap and your koala is made!
