visible mending

I have pretty much always mended my clothes. Up until now I have tried to mend subtly so the mend can’t be seen. However, I have become increasingly interested in the concept of ‘visible mending’. You can find out more about visible mending on Kate Sekules’ website visiblemending.com.

When a pair of my jeans started to wear thin I decided to give visible mending a go. The production of jeans and denim is hugely damaging to the environment and this was also a significant reason why I wanted to extend their life.

I needed some new needles and took this opportunity to buy some good quality supplies. I shopped online at Beyond Measure as they have a beautiful range of threads and needles.

I backed the worn area with denim I salvaged from another pair of old jeans and then joined the pieces together with a couple of different types of stitch.  It took me quite some time to do this mend, but then that’s all part of the process. Much had gone in to the making of these jeans so it felt right that I should take time and care in preserving them.

I hope to continue wearing these jeans for some time and expect that I will need to repair them again in the future.

I first saw this on instagram – thank you for the extra photos here. What a pretty repair – it makes me want to learn how to do lazy daisies.
